The classic southern loop with one deliberate change: two nights at Khongor Els instead of one, so you climb the dunes at sunrise as well as sunset. You pay for that in driving — two long transfer days on gravel. Written and guided by Bat-Erdene, who grew up in Bulgan sum.

The Yolyn Am ice gorge on foot
A 3 km walk into the gorge, where ice lingers into July. Afternoon free at camp; the shower here can run cold.

Khongor Els — the singing dunes, camel ride at sunset
The hard drive day: 6–7 h. Arrive mid-afternoon, ride Bactrian camels along the Khongoryn Gol, then climb the ridge for sunset. You sleep here twice, so the sunrise climb is optional and unhurried.

Optional 45-minute climb at dawn. After lunch we move 20 minutes to a camel-herding family and sleep in their guest ger.
